Friends showed up at my house for Sunday lunch raving about Chris Legg‘s sermon. Of course, I was really curious about what was causing all the fuss. So, I searched the web and got his permission to share the video. In it, he takes on the border crisis and redefines race for us.

In typical Chris fashion, his information builds carefully and thoroughly, crescendoing at the very end. So, hang on to hear his summary. When I emailed him, he added this, “I also have articles on my website about the theology of race if someone wanted further reading.” You can find more on race by clicking here.

I love the idea that normal folks can make a big difference by uniting for positive impact.

Somehow, it seems related to me, as we talk about loving others and unity among Christ followers, to mention the upcoming Lee Greenwood concert in Tyler.

Hosted by Church Under the Bridge, the musician is coming to call attention to Tyler’s Pillars of Love. Dr. Sasha Vukelja is involved and many of us admire the way she exemplifies uniting and loving folks. (If you missed the episode she did with us about what a breast cancer diagnosis means for daughters, you can find it here.)

Border Crisis and Race are Complicated

Border Crisis? Fatherhood? Community with Chris Legg

Chris clarifies that the border crisis is not a simple issue, just like the way we think about race is complicated. What is pretty simple is the calling we have as Christians to unify and glorify God. Easier said than done, I suppose, but a worthy goal for us all. By the way, in case you missed it, Chris shared his best life hacks for fathers on Fireside Talk Radio and I blogged about it here. I also loved Janet McHenry‘s insight about how to deal with injustice. Plus, SharRon Jamison talks about being a friend maker and overcoming some of her experiences as a child. All of these friends offer terrific wisdom that can easily apply to how we personally handle the daily strain of perceived race divisions and, yes, even the border crisis.

May we pray together?

Father in heaven, Your children seem to divide and self-segregate in creative ways that must astonish the heavenly host. Obviously, we need Your help, O Lord, to appreciate and respect each other. Unity, it seems, requires miracles. Oh, how we crave unity and tender fellowship! Let us be children who glorify You well by loving and honoring others. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

We love to hear from you

What is your church doing to foster unity? How have you seen someone put aside man-made divisions to heal hurts along racial lines? What do you pray for when you think of the border crisis?
